School Action Teams

This is a numbers game. To urge our leaders to take climate action, we need a surge of public comments and advocacy. Many Georgians don't realize the crucial role our Georgia Public Service Commissioners and state legislators play in the clean energy transition. Help raise awareness at your high school, college or university!

OUR MAIN ASK right now is that you encourage your fellow students to submit public comments to our five Georgia Public Service Commissioners asking them to require Georgia Power to rapidly transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy.

We are all busy, but this really doesn't have to take much time or effort. We have created some materials so that a club or small group of friends can quickly spread the word. Here are some suggested methods to inform your school community:

Distribute Flyers: Post flyers around school/campus or share them through text and social media. We have created one (see Resource Materials section below) that contains a QR code and link to a form where people can easily make a public comment in just a few minutes! Feel free to use our flyer or create your own, but remember to include the link and QR code.

Show a climate video: Many students are not aware of the urgency of climate change or how they can help. The Rise Up for Clean Energy team has created a 13 minute video that explores the connection between electricity generation and climate change and the key role that our Georgia Public Service Commissioners play in securing clean energy for our state. College students can show the video during club meetings. High school students can ask science teachers to show the video during class. Grab some friends to make the personal ask of teachers, and then you can follow up with an email (see Resource Materials section below).

Set Up a Table: Set up a stand, booth, or table during lunch to spread the word, answer questions, and encourage your peers to make a comment in support of clean energy.

Create a Custom Outreach Method: Think about another way that fits your school’s environment, whether it’s a digital campaign, a competition, or a school-wide event. Share your creative ideas with us, and we can incorporate them into our approach and spread the word further!

April is Earth Month and April 22nd is Earth Day. This is a great time to reach out to students to ask them to take action to protect our planet and our future. You can continue your efforts till the end of the school year, though. Commissioners are currently reviewing Georgia Power's energy sourcing plan, a monthslong process that involves sets of public hearings, and will make their final decision in July.

Please let us know that you are working to engage your school by clicking on the button below and taking just a minute to fill out a sign up form.

The form also allows you to indicate if you would like to get involved in other ways, now or in the future. Our main effort now is reaching out to people to make public comments, but there are many other ways to make an impact if you have the time or interest.

We will update this section with additional flyers, posters and letters. Feel free to use the material as is or to edit to add your voice. If you have materials to share, please send them are way!
